Any website owner should be able to tell you how important good website promotion is, actually if you don’t know what you are doing very well then you can cause damage to your site. There are lots of different ways to promote a website, not all of these are good. There are lots of common mistakes that people make when promoting websites and we’re going to look at five of them now…
Spam- don’t do it! – Sending out unsolicited email will attract nothing but hate to your business. It will also cause you to be blacklisted or barred from large ISP’s, which will utterly cripple any and all of your traffic. Spam will destroy your reputation and kill of whatever business you already have.
Submission services – There are lots of people who will quite happily spend to list their site on 100′s of search engines. There really are not even 100 search engines that you want your website to be on in the first place, and the other issue surrounding this, is the fact that most of these services will simply submit your URL to an auto-submitter, which can once again get you sand boxed, as the search engines take note of these kinds of services. The reason search engines can track this, is because most submission services use the same devices and websites to submit their client’s projects in to. If you need to use one of these services then ensure that they are genuine and aren’t just taking you for a ride, read reviews and find out what they will do for the money.
Search engine submission- Although there are lots of search engines on the internet very few of them are used regularly. There are only around 30 important search engines, it might be possible to find specialist directories which are aimed at your target audience. If you are writing about computers then find directories which are popular with computer users.
Yahoo – It’s very important to submit your site to Yahoo however this will be one of the hardest, this is because all submissions are reviewed by humans and not machines. You should take your time with your application to ensure that your site gets added as quickly as possible
Closed – You should never submit your site until it is open and working properly. Check that the site is free from spelling errors and works properly before submission. Few internet users will bother revisiing a website which has an underconstruction message anywhere on it.
